Buon Giorno from Rome - Get Ready for 2026!
OBSERVATIONS FROM THE ACHTZEHNS
Arriving in Rome, you're immediately struck by the sheer amount of history surrounding you. It's impossible to look anywhere without seeing structures and monuments that are thousands of years old. It is both gorgeous and a bit overwhelming.
GRAFFITI
Now, let's talk about something that might catch you off guard: graffiti. Rome's ancient beauty is everywhere, but you'll also see a lot of modern-day street art. When I first arrived, coming from Chicago where spray paint is a no-go and graffiti is mostly seen as vandalism, it was definitely a bit jarring.
But here's the cool part: once you get past that initial surprise, you'll find it quickly fades into the background as you soak in all the truly breathtaking sights. And after chatting with some locals, my whole perspective shifted. While they're not necessarily "fans" of all the modern tags, they often view it less as vandalism and more as a way for people to express themselves or even communicate.
Turns out, this isn't a new concept for Romans! Think about ancient Pompeii – graffiti there was actually a form of literacy for everyday folks who weren't part of the educated elite. Understanding that historical connection really helped me see past what I initially thought was just destruction and appreciate another layer of Rome's incredible, complex story.
HEAT
Let me tell you, the heat in Italy is no joke! I've always known Italian summers get pretty warm, which is why I usually suggest clients aim for the shoulder seasons—think April, May, September, or October. Not only is the weather often nicer then, but you can usually find better prices too.
Even though summer is super popular for visiting Italy, the heat can feel like the hottest Chicago summer with almost no break. Especially in Rome, where there's so much stone and asphalt in the sidewalks and buildings, those materials really trap and radiate the heat, making you feel like you're practically baking in the sun. In the evenings when the sun goes down, the climate is absolutely perfect. So, if you do get caught in the summer heat, try to spend your time outdoors in the evenings when you can enjoy the outdoor dining, live music, and perfect weather.
AIR CONDITIONING
Let's talk about air conditioning in Italy, because it's a bit different from what most Americans are used to. The summer heat is intense, and honestly, there's not much relief from it. Beyond the direct sun and the heat radiating from all that beautiful stone and asphalt, you'll find AC is surprisingly scarce.
Even when it is available, it's often not the powerful, low-temperature kind we're accustomed to; think more like a modest window unit. I even found myself asking locals on public transport why the AC seemed so absent. It was wild to see Americans and Irish visitors visibly wilting while Italians around us looked perfectly comfortable, even in suits! Their ability to handle the heat is truly something else.
I learned that many Italians, across generations, have a genuine skepticism about air conditioning, with some even believing it can make you sick. I chuckled at first, but then I did a quick search, and it's a widely held sentiment! This experience has cemented my advice: if you're planning a trip to Italy, summer is definitely a time to avoid. While some places catering to tourists will have familiar AC, you'll still be spending most of your sightseeing time in the elements.
ICE & COLD DRINKS
If you're anything like me and enjoy a cold beer or iced coffee on a hot day, there's a little tip for Italy: always confirm the temperature before you order!
I love a good Peroni on a sweltering Italian afternoon, but since I usually stick to just one, I want it perfectly chilled. After getting a couple of lukewarm beers, I quickly learned to ask about the "freddo" (coldness) before settling down. The same goes for iced coffee fans; it's not as common there as it is in the US, so it's always best to check first to avoid any surprises!
COFFEE
Alright, coffee lovers, listen up! I'm a big fan of black coffee – usually a good medium or even light roast with excellent bean flavor (definitely not that burnt, ashtray taste you get from some big chains, if you know what I mean!). But in Italy, it's a whole different ball game.
If you like to sip and savor your morning cup, just ordering a "coffee" will get you a shot of espresso. Their Americano? Locals jokingly call it "dirty water," and honestly, it's not far off if you're used to a robust black brew.
So, I quickly learned to embrace the local way: multiple cups of cappuccino. It's the best way to get that same satisfying coffee impact without feeling like you're chugging an espresso or drinking "dirty water." When in Rome, right?
THE FOOD - ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE
Oh, the food! I honestly can't say enough about it. We ate so much delicious food in Italy, and I'm not kidding, we didn't have one single bad meal. We even started just wandering into random places, and the food was consistently incredible everywhere we went.
We always do food tours when we travel, and during one in the Trastevere neighborhood, we tried Cacio e Pepe for the first time. Oh my goodness, it's my new favorite! I'd seen it on menus before and thought, "meh, cheese and pasta, how exciting can that be?" But truly, when it's done right, it's magical. It's simply a thick-noodled spaghetti with Pecorino cheese and black pepper, and it is absolutely delicious! It's considered a truly Roman dish, originally created by shepherds as an economical meal.
APEROL SPRITZ - NOT ALL CREATED EQUAL
I have a friend who's been drinking Aperol Spritzes for years, but honestly, I always found them a bit bitter and just "meh." However, during that same food tour I mentioned, we stopped at a local spot and had an Aperol Spritz that was absolutely amazing!
They also drink Campari Spritzes in Italy, which tasted more like the Aperol Spritzes I'd tried back in the States. So, I had to ask our guide. He explained in great detail how an Aperol Spritz should be made and that if it tastes bitter, it's simply not mixed correctly with the proper ingredients. That explained so much!
SURPRISINGLY AFFORDABLE
One of the most delightful surprises was how affordable everything was! Even though 1 Euro is roughly equivalent to 80 cents USD right now, you get so much more for your money in Italy than you would back home. Those incredible meals I mentioned earlier? They were easily half, even a quarter, of what we'd pay in the US.
And the shopping! I did a lot of it, and it was unbelievably inexpensive compared to US prices. I'm usually a bargain shopper since I like to update my wardrobe often, only splurging on staples like handbags, shoes, and coats. But for everyday clothes, I'm always looking for great value. My daughter and I spent an entire day shopping and came back with bags full of beautiful, bargain finds. We later realized we'd been shopping on what Rome considers its "Rodeo Drive," Via dei Condotti – absolutely amazing!
FEELING SAFE
As a female traveler, I'm always mindful of my surroundings, especially in big cities where you can sometimes feel unsafe or watched when walking alone. However, I have to say, I didn't experience that once in Rome.
Now, I wasn't being reckless, and I always teach my daughters to be careful and avoid things like roaming unfamiliar streets at night. But even when we ventured into more local neighborhoods with fewer people around, I never once felt uncomfortable. It was truly a great feeling.
BRING ERUOS FOR THE RESTROOMS
Here's something that might be completely new for Americans: you'll often need Euros to use public restrooms in Italy. Unless you're a paying customer at a café or restaurant, you'll typically have to pay a small fee, usually 50 cents to 1 Euro, to use the facilities.
So, be prepared! If you don't have those coins handy, you might be in for an uncomfortable wait until your next bathroom opportunity.
FREE WATER EVERYWHERE!
Unlike the paid restrooms, Rome is incredibly generous with free, clean drinking water! You'll find what Romans call nasoni or fontanelle (drinking fountains) all over the city. These are actually part of the ancient Roman aqueduct system, which is still operating today – how cool is that?!
These aqueducts bring fresh, drinkable water from springs and rivers in the hills outside Rome. They were originally built between 312 BC and AD 226 to improve public health, and it's truly an impressive feat of engineering that they're still working. So, definitely bring your reusable water bottle – you can even Google their locations to find them easily!
DAY TRIPS
Day trips from Rome are surprisingly easy, thanks to Italy's high-speed train system and tour companies that understand families often prefer to base themselves in one city. We took day trips to both Tuscany and the Amalfi Coast from Rome, and while we were definitely exhausted by the end of each day, it was absolutely worth it. I've sent quite a few of you to those beautiful locations, and we'll definitely be back ourselves to spend more time in Sorrento, as well as Cinque Terre, Florence, and probably Venice in the future.
STANDARD ITALIAN LANGUAGE
Not all Italians speak the same language, and even if someone was born in Italy but hasn't been there in a few decades, they might have trouble communicating with locals. While Italian is the official language, so many regional dialects with significant differences have become predominant all over Italy. Our guide even confessed that when traveling outside of Rome, he sometimes has trouble communicating with locals in other cities, even though he was born and raised in Rome.
Here's an interesting bit of background I learned during my visit: Roman Italian, or Romanesco, is actually derived from Classic Latin, which was the language originally spoken in Rome. Standard Italian, the country's official language, is based on a Tuscan dialect that evolved from regional variations over centuries.
A TALLER PERSPECTIVE
As a woman who's a bit taller than average, I quickly noticed that Italians are generally quite small! My daughters, who are the same height as me at 5'11", joked about us "fee-fi-fo-fumming" our way through Italy. It was quite a contrast to our last trip to Ireland, where our hearty Irish/Viking ancestors seemed to look us right in the eye or even tower over us.
This smaller stature has a few practical implications. I often found myself in tight quarters with low ceilings and narrow spaces, especially in public restrooms. Also, when it came to shopping, many of those gorgeous "one-size-fits-all" silk dresses and skirts were simply too small for us. Generally speaking, clothing and shoes tend to run a bit smaller to accommodate the local build, so it's something to keep in mind if you're planning to shop!
HISTORY SO MUCH HISTORY
Last but definitely not least the history – there is so much incredible history in Italy in general but in Rome where it all started according to many Romans, our family was giggling about this by the time we left because there is so much pride. The Romans do feel that everything literally everything in the world came from Rome 😊 and It was very endearing if not completely accurate. It would be impossible to see all of the history in Rome in one trip, definitely not even the most well known sights in Italy. So whether you’re a history buff or not, prepare yourself to spend lots of time learning about the past and ancient Rome. Speaking as someone who is not a history buff I will say it’s definitely worth it.
IT TRULY IS A TRIP FOR EVERYONE
I know I've missed a few things, but I must say, overall Italy was an amazing experience, and I truly can't think of anyone who wouldn't love visiting this beautiful country. It simply has so much to offer everyone.
Since I have detered many from going to Italy in 2025 I want to address PLANNING YOUR 2026 ITALIAN JOURNEY.
With the Olympics drawing significant attention, certain areas and dates will be in high demand. Here's my advice:
Book Early, Especially for February 2026: If you plan to attend the Winter Olympics, secure your flights, accommodations, and event tickets as soon as possible.
Consider the Shoulder Seasons: For non-Olympic travel, the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) remain ideal for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.
Mix Iconic and Off-the-Beaten-Path: Combine visits to world-famous landmarks with explorations of charming smaller towns or rural areas for a more authentic and balanced experience.
Embrace Slow Travel: Instead of rushing from city to city, consider spending more time in fewer locations to truly immerse yourself in the local culture.
Consult Your Travel Advisor! This is where I come in! Navigating the nuances of Italian travel, especially during a major event like the Olympics, can be complex. I can help you:
Secure the best flights and accommodations.
Craft a personalized itinerary that balances your interests with logistical considerations.
Advise on local transportation, dining, and activities.
Provide insider tips to make your trip truly exceptional.
Italy in 2026 is poised to be an unforgettable year, offering a unique blend of sporting excitement, profound cultural experiences, and culinary delights. Let's work together to make your Italian dreams a reality!

Don't Leave Home Without It: Your Essential Guide to Travel Insurance!
Hi Traveler,
In this newsletter, I’d like to cover one of the least discussed yet most crucial elements of planning travel. We all hope never to need it, but when we do, it can truly save your trip (and your wallet!) when the unexpected happens: travel insurance.
The world of travel protection can seem a bit daunting, full of jargon and endless options. That's why, in this issue, we're going to demystify travel insurance and break down exactly what you need to know to travel with peace of mind.
Travel Insurance: Your Safety Net on the Road
Think of travel insurance as your personal safety net, catching you when unforeseen circumstances threaten to derail your carefully planned journey. From a sudden illness, flight itinerary issues, to lost luggage or a natural disaster, travel insurance can provide financial protection and support when you need it most.
Key Types of Coverage You Should Look For:
While policies vary widely, here are the core types of coverage you should consider when purchasing travel insurance:
Trip Cancellation & Interruption:
What it covers: Reimburses you for pre-paid, non-refundable expenses if your trip is canceled or cut short due to covered reasons (e.g., illness, injury, natural disaster, unforeseen work obligations).
Why it's essential: Imagine having to cancel a dream vacation due to an unforeseen emergency. This coverage can protect your financial investment and allow you to recoup your losses to be used to plan again in the future
Things to keep in mind: Reimbursement for these cancellations & interruptions vary widely, so discuss the details of the percentage of reimbursement as well as covered reasons before purchasing the policy to assure you have the coverage you prefer.
Emergency Medical & Dental:
What it covers: Pays for medical emergencies, hospital stays, doctor visits, and even emergency medical evacuation if you get sick or injured while traveling.
Why it's essential: Your domestic health insurance might not cover you internationally, or may offer limited coverage. Medical costs abroad can be astronomical, and this is arguably the most critical component of any travel insurance policy.
Things to keep in mind: Discuss what is covered and if you should add additional medical coverage based on your personal needs.
Baggage Loss, Delay & Damage:
What it covers: Reimburses you for lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and its contents. It can also provide funds to purchase essential items if your bags are significantly delayed.
Why it's essential: While inconvenient, losing your luggage happens. This coverage helps you replace essentials and provides compensation for lost items.
Things to keep in mind: Discuss coverage amounts to ensure you are sufficiently covered for your specific trip. In a scenario where expensive items may need to be replaced, be sure you have the appropriate coverage. Also, receipts are typically necessary to be reimbursed for replacement items, so keep those receipts to add to your claim documents.
Travel Delay:
What it covers: Provides reimbursement for unexpected expenses (like meals and accommodations) if your trip is delayed for a specified period due to covered reasons (e.g., severe weather, airline mechanical issues).
Why it's essential: Flight delays are common. This coverage can soften the blow of unexpected overnight stays or extra meal costs.
Things to keep in mind: Again, receipts are typically necessary to be reimbursed, so keep those receipts for costs accrued during your delay to add to your claim documents. Also, be sure the daily delay coverage amounts meet your specific needs.
Understanding the Fine Print: Important Considerations
Pre-Existing Conditions: If you have a pre-existing medical condition, ensure your policy explicitly covers it. Some policies require you to purchase coverage within a certain timeframe after your initial trip deposit to waive exclusions for pre-existing conditions.
"Cancel for Any Reason" (CFAR) & "Interrupt for Any Reason" (IFAR): These are premium upgrades that offer more flexibility. CFAR allows you to cancel your trip for any reason (not just covered reasons) and receive a partial refund. Similarly, IFAR allows you to interrupt for any reason. These are more expensive but provide ultimate peace of mind.
Adventure Activities: If you plan on engaging in high-risk activities like scuba diving, heli-skiing, or bungee jumping, check if your policy explicitly covers these. Many standard policies exclude them.
Policy Limits & Deductibles: Understand the maximum amount the policy will pay out for each type of coverage and any deductibles you might have to pay before coverage kicks in.
Provider Reputation: Speak to your travel advisor regarding the reputation of your insurance provider. Be sure to choose a provider with a strong track record for customer service and claims processing.
When Should You Buy Travel Insurance?
It's generally recommended to purchase travel insurance as soon as you make your first significant trip deposit, especially if you're looking for coverage for pre-existing conditions or "cancel for any reason" benefits. However, you can typically purchase it up until the day before your departure, though some benefits may be limited.
Don't Let the Unexpected Ruin Your Adventure!
While we all hope for smooth sailing on our travels, the reality is that unforeseen events can and do happen. Investing in the right travel insurance policy is a small price to pay for the significant peace of mind it provides. It allows you to focus on creating incredible memories, knowing you're protected against the unexpected.

Wanderlust & Well-being: Journeys That Reshape Us
In this newsletter, I’d like to move beyond the postcard-perfect destinations and the rules and regulations required to get there to delve into something deeper: the profound, often unexpected, ways travel can impact us. It's more than just seeing new sights; it's about shifting perspectives, challenging assumptions, and promoting personal growth.
Think back to a journey that truly resonated with you. Was it the breathtaking vista that stole your breath? Or perhaps a quiet encounter with a local that shifted your understanding of a different way of life? These moments, big and small, weave into the fabric of our perspective.
Travel has a unique power to:
Expand Our Empathy: Stepping outside our familiar surroundings exposes us to diverse cultures, beliefs, and experiences. We learn to see the world through different eyes, fostering greater understanding and compassion.
Cultivate Resilience: Navigating unfamiliar territories, overcoming logistical hurdles, and adapting to new environments builds inner strength and resourcefulness. We discover a capacity for resilience we may not have known we possessed.
Ignite Creativity: New sights, sounds, and tastes can spark inspiration and unlock creative potential. The change of scenery can break mental ruts and foster fresh perspectives.
Foster Self-Discovery: Removed from the routines and expectations of daily life and allowed time to relax and decompress, travel provides space for introspection. We gain clarity about our values, passions, and who we are.
Deepen Connections: Sharing experiences with loved ones on a journey can forge stronger bonds and create lasting memories. Even solo travel can lead to unexpected connections with fellow adventurers.
Enhance Gratitude: Experiencing different living conditions and ways of life can encourage a deeper appreciation for what we have. We return home with a renewed sense of gratitude.
This isn't just about escaping; it's about engaging. It's about allowing ourselves to be moved, challenged, and ultimately, changed by the world around us.
What transformative journey is calling to you? Perhaps it's a mindful retreat in nature, a cultural immersion in a vibrant city, or an adventurous trek through untamed landscapes.

Explore the iconic Torres del Paine National Park with its towering granite peaks, turquoise lakes, and glaciers calving into icy waters. Trek along legendary trails like the W Trek or the "O" Circuit, or take a boat trip to witness the grandeur of Perito Moreno Glacier (though technically in Argentina, it's often visited as part of a Patagonian adventure).

Wander through its labyrinthine alleys, soak in the artistic atmosphere, and enjoy fresh seafood with ocean views.
Wine Regions: A Taste of Chile: Indulge your senses in Chile's renowned wine valleys, such as the Maipo, Casablanca, and Colchagua Valleys. Take a tour of picturesque vineyards, learn about the winemaking process, and, of course, savor world-class Carménère, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sauvignon Blanc.
Planning Your Chilean Escape:
Best Time to Visit: The shoulder seasons (spring: September-November, and autumn: March-May) generally offer pleasant weather throughout much of the country. Summer (December-February) is ideal for Patagonia, while winter (June-August) is best for skiing in the Andes.
Getting Around: Chile has a well-developed transportation network, including domestic flights, long-distance buses, and rental cars. Within cities, public transport and taxis are readily available.
Currency: The Chilean Peso (CLP).
Language: Spanish is the official language. While some English is spoken in tourist areas, learning a few basic Spanish phrases will enhance your experience.

The Smart Traveler’s Secret: Why Booking Early is the Best Strategy
In the world of travel, timing is everything! While spontaneous getaways can be exciting, there are undeniable benefits to planning and booking your trips at least six months in advance and honestly the earlier the better. Whether you’re dreaming of a luxurious cruise, a European adventure, or a relaxing beach retreat, early planning can make all the difference. Here’s why:
1. Better Pricing & Exclusive Deals
Many airlines, cruise lines, and hotels offer their best rates to early bookers. As demand increases, prices tend to rise, meaning the longer you wait, the more you may pay. Booking in advance locks in the best fares before they climb.
2. More Availability & Better Selection
The earlier you book, the more choices you have. From preferred airline seats to top-tier hotel rooms and the best cruise cabins, early planners get first pick. This is especially crucial for peak travel seasons, holiday getaways, and bucket-list destinations.
3. Lower Deposits & Flexible Payment Plans
Many travel providers allow you to secure your booking with a small deposit when you plan ahead. This means you can lock in your trip and take advantage of flexible payment plans rather than paying in full last-minute.
4. Time for Customization & Special Requests
Need a connecting room? Prefer an ocean-view suite? Want a private tour in Rome? When you book early, you have ample time to personalize your itinerary and ensure all your preferences are met.
5. Peace of Mind & Less Stress
Planning ahead means less last-minute scrambling, reduced stress, and more time to dream and prepare for your trip. You can focus on packing, excursions, and making the most of your experience instead of worrying about availability or soaring costs.
6. Maximizing Loyalty Perks & Rewards
If you're a frequent traveler or a member of loyalty programs, early booking allows you to optimize points, upgrades, and other perks before limited availability kicks in.
7. Avoiding Travel Disruptions
Booking well in advance gives you a buffer in case of unexpected travel restrictions, itinerary changes, or other disruptions. With more time to plan, you can adjust accordingly without compromising your trip.
Ready to Plan Your Next Adventure?
Whether you’re envisioning a dream cruise, a cultural escape, or a family vacation, I’m here to help you navigate the options and secure the best deals. Let’s get started on crafting your perfect itinerary—six months ahead means six times the benefits!

Everything You Need to Know About the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)
If you’re planning to visit the United Kingdom, there’s an important new requirement you should be aware of—the UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). This system is designed to streamline border security and facilitate smoother entry for eligible travelers. Not to be confused with ETIAS which I’ve previously mentioned but has not officially gone into effect yet. I will keep you posted on ETIAS in future emails as things develop. Here’s everything you need to know about the now-in-effect UK ETA.
What is the UK ETA?
The UK ETA is a new electronic travel authorization system that will be mandatory for visitors from certain countries who do not require a visa to enter the UK. It is part of the UK government’s broader initiative to digitize and enhance border controls.
Who Needs to Apply for a UK ETA?
The ETA will apply to travelers from visa-exempt countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and EU nations, among others. If you previously entered the UK without needing a visa, you may now be required to obtain an ETA before your trip. Here is a link to check the details. Keep in mind that even if the UK is not your destination but you are simply pass through on a flight, you will still need the UK ETA.
How Does the UK ETA Work?
Travelers must apply online before their trip, providing personal details, passport information, and answering security-related questions. The application process is simple, with most approvals granted within 48 to 72 hours.
Why is the UK Introducing the ETA?
The UK ETA aims to improve border security by pre-screening travelers before they arrive. It also helps streamline entry processes, reducing wait times at immigration checkpoints and making travel more efficient.
How to Apply for a UK ETA
Applying for an ETA will be done through the official government portal and there is an app you can download from there further simplifying the process. You’ll need:
A valid passport
Personal and contact details
Travel itinerary (if applicable)
A credit or debit card to pay the application fee
When Did the UK ETA Come Into Effect?
The ETA was introduced in phases, starting with select countries. It has now become a full requirement for all eligible travelers as of January 2025.
Final Thoughts
If you plan to visit the UK in the near future, checking the ETA requirements should be on your pre-travel checklist. Stay informed, apply ahead of time, and enjoy a seamless travel experience to or through the UK!

Goodbye 2024/Hello 2025
As the year draws to a close, I want to take a moment to reflect on the amazing journeys of 2024 and look ahead to the exciting possibilities awaiting in 2025. Whether you’ve already checked off a bucket list destination or are planning your next escape, I’m here to inspire your travels and help you make the most of the year to come.
Let’s take a look at some of the trends, tips, and destinations that should be on your radar for the coming year.
Looking Back: Travel Highlights of 2024
This year has been filled with incredible travel moments, and I’m excited to celebrate some of the best:
The Rise of Wellness Travel: More travelers than ever are embracing mindful travel to improve wellness or continue their wellness journey while traveling. This has become my personal passion, and I have certified in wellness travel in 2024, joined the Virtuoso Wellness community, and plan to make wellness travel a big part of my business in 2025.
Solo Travel Surge: The spirit of adventure was alive with solo travelers embracing independence and self-discovery. Popular destinations included remote retreats in Costa Rica and cultural immersion experiences in Japan.
Off-the-Beaten-Path Adventures: Remote destinations like Bhutan, Madagascar, and the Faroe Islands gained traction as travelers sought unique experiences away from the crowds.
2025 Travel Trends: What’s Coming Next?
The travel landscape is constantly evolving, and I’m excited to see what the future holds. Here are the key trends expected to dominate in 2025:
Space Tourism: The next frontier in travel is here. While still in its early stages, space tourism is gaining momentum, with companies offering suborbital flights to the edge of space for the ultimate bucket list experience.
Wellness and Digital Detox Retreats: As we continue to navigate the fast-paced digital world, more travelers are seeking off-grid, wellness-focused experiences. Think yoga retreats in the mountains, silent meditation in the desert, spa getaways in nature, luxurious resort-styled medical facilities that offer all of the above as well as onsite Physicians and Eastern Medicine Practitioners who can provide full health screening panels and make suggestions on how to improve health and longevity.
Slow Travel: In 2025, the emphasis will shift towards slow, immersive travel experiences. Instead of rushing through multiple destinations, more people will be focusing on deepening their connection with a single place over an extended period.
Destination Spotlight: The Wonders of Chile
For those seeking a unique adventure in 2025, Chile is quickly becoming a must-visit destination. With its diverse landscapes, from the driest desert in the world to the lush forests and glaciers of Patagonia, Chile offers an extraordinary variety of experiences:
Atacama Desert: Known for its stunning salt flats, pink-hued lagoons, and the breathtaking Valle de la Luna, the Atacama is one of the most photogenic places on Earth.
Patagonia: For outdoor lovers, Patagonia’s national parks offer jaw-dropping landscapes, trekking, and opportunities to spot wildlife like pumas, condors, and penguins.
Valparaiso: A colorful, artistic coastal city full of vibrant street art, unique architecture, and delicious seafood.
Chile is perfect for travelers looking for both relaxation and adventure.
Plan Ahead for 2025: The Best Deals and Early Bird Discounts
Now is the time to start planning your 2025 trips, and booking early can save you big! Here are a few ways to secure the best deals:
Book Your Summer Vacation Early: Many airlines and hotels offer discounts for early bookings, especially for popular destinations like Europe and Southeast Asia.
Holiday Packages: Get ahead of the crowd by booking winter holiday packages for 2025 early. Secure your spots for ski resorts or tropical beach escapes!
Special Offers: Keep an eye on exclusive holiday discounts, group travel deals, and loyalty programs that may be available in the new year.
Travel Tip: Navigating Airport Crowds
The holiday season often brings busy airports and longer waits. Here are a few tips to make your airport experience smoother:
Arrive Early: Arriving at least 2-3 hours before your flight will help reduce stress and give you extra time for check-in and security.
Use Mobile Boarding Passes: Save time by checking in online and using mobile boarding passes.
Pack Smart: To speed through security, pack light, and avoid carrying prohibited items. Keep your essentials in an easily accessible place.
Thank you for being part of our travel community in 2024! I am beyond excited to help you create new memories and explore the world in 2025. Stay tuned for more travel inspiration, tips, and updates in the year to come.

Christmas Traditions Around the World
Germany – Christmas Markets and Advent Calendars
Germany is famous for its Christmas markets (Weihnachtsmärkte), which are set up in towns and cities across the country. The most famous market is in Nuremberg, where visitors can shop for handcrafted ornaments, enjoy hot mulled wine (Glühwein), and try festive treats like Lebkuchen (gingerbread). Another beloved tradition is the Advent calendar, a festive way to count down the days until Christmas, with a small treat or surprise behind each window.
Mexico – Las Posadas
In Mexico, Christmas celebrations begin with Las Posadas, a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s search for a place to stay in Bethlehem. This event takes place for nine nights leading up to Christmas Eve. Groups of people, often dressed as Mary and Joseph, go door-to-door singing carols and asking for shelter, only to be turned away until they finally find a home. The evening culminates in a festive party with piñatas, food, and treats like tamales and atole.
Italy – La Befana
In Italy, Christmas is followed by the celebration of La Befana on January 6th, also known as the Epiphany. According to legend, an old woman named Befana delivers gifts to children on Epiphany Eve. Similar to Santa Claus, she enters through the chimney and leaves presents in stockings. In some regions, children leave a plate of food or wine for her, and if they've been good, they receive candy or small toys. If they’ve been naughty, they get a lump of coal (or dark candy).
Sweden – St. Lucia’s Day
In Sweden, St. Lucia’s Day (December 13th) marks the beginning of Christmas celebrations. The day is celebrated with processions of girls dressed in white gowns with red sashes and wearing wreaths of candles on their heads, representing St. Lucia, the patron saint of light. The tradition symbolizes bringing light into the darkest days of winter. In the evening, families gather to share Lussekatter (saffron buns) and warm drinks.
Finland – Santa Claus Village
Finland is known as the home of Santa Claus. In Rovaniemi, located on the Arctic Circle, there is a Santa Claus Village where visitors can meet Santa, send postcards from the official Santa Claus post office, and enjoy snowy winter activities like reindeer rides. In Finnish tradition, Christmas Eve is a time for family gatherings, a sauna, and a festive meal of ham, root vegetable casseroles, and rice porridge.
Japan – Christmas KFC
While Christmas is not a traditional holiday in Japan, it has become widely celebrated in modern times. One of the most unique aspects of Japanese Christmas is the tradition of having KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken) for Christmas dinner. This started in the 1970s as a marketing campaign, and it has since become a beloved custom. Families order KFC buckets weeks in advance to ensure they can enjoy this festive meal.
Spain – El Gordo and Christmas Lotteries
In Spain, Christmas is synonymous with the world’s largest lottery, El Gordo, which takes place on December 22nd. This lottery is a national event, and the entire country gathers to watch the drawing, which is broadcast live. People of all ages sing songs as they announce the winning numbers, and entire families often pool their money to buy tickets for a chance to win.
Greece – Christopsomo
In Greece, Christmas is celebrated with a special bread called Christopsomo (Christ's bread). It is typically made with a rich dough flavored with spices, nuts, and sometimes fruit, and it is decorated with a cross to symbolize the Christian faith. On Christmas Eve, the family gathers around to share the bread, which is also believed to bring blessings to the household for the coming year.
Australia – Christmas on the Beach
In Australia, Christmas falls during the summer months, so many Australians celebrate with barbecues and beach outings rather than the traditional winter celebrations. While some families still enjoy a Christmas roast, others gather at the beach for picnics or even take part in surfing Santas—a fun tradition where people dress up as Santa Claus and ride the waves. Christmas carols are sung, and outdoor events are common.
Iceland – The Yule Lads
In Iceland, Christmas traditions are steeped in folklore. The Yule Lads (13 mischievous elves) arrive on the 12 nights leading up to Christmas, and they leave small gifts or sweets for children who have been good. If children are naughty, they might receive a potato instead! This tradition is part of a larger cultural narrative involving trolls and other mythical creatures. Additionally, Icelanders celebrate Christmas Eve with a festive dinner, often featuring ham, lamb, and risalamande (rice pudding).
Norway – The Christmas Witch
In Norway, it’s believed that Christmas Eve is a time when witches and evil spirits come out to cause mischief. To protect their homes, Norwegians hide their brooms, as it is thought that witches will steal them to fly off on Christmas Eve. This superstition has been passed down through generations and adds an element of mystery and fun to the holiday season.
Philippines – Simbang Gabi
In the Philippines, Christmas festivities start early with the Simbang Gabi, a series of nine dawn Masses that begin on December 16th and continue until Christmas Eve. This tradition is deeply rooted in Filipino Catholicism, and after the mass, people enjoy puto bumbong (purple rice cakes) and bibingka (rice cakes). Christmas Day itself is marked by a feast that includes a variety of Filipino dishes, such as lechon (roast pig) and pancit (noodles).
United Kingdom – Christmas Crackers
In the UK, Christmas crackers are a beloved tradition. These colorful, paper-wrapped tubes are pulled apart by two people, creating a festive pop. Inside the cracker is typically a small gift, a paper crown, and a joke. Families often wear the crowns during their Christmas meal, and the jokes are read aloud for everyone to enjoy. The crackers are a must-have at the Christmas table.
Ireland - Midnight Mass & Christmas Day Swim
Many Irish families attend a late-night Mass, known as the Midnight Mass, to celebrate the birth of Christ. This tradition is an important part of the Christmas season and is often followed by a family gathering at home. Another beloved Irish tradition is the Christmas Day Swim. In coastal towns, people take part in a brisk dip in the cold ocean, often for charity. It's a quirky and fun way to mark Christmas Day, and despite the chilly waters, it’s a popular tradition!
From quirky customs like Japan’s KFC tradition to Spain’s El Gordo lottery, Christmas around the world is celebrated in ways that reflect diverse cultural beliefs and regional influences. Whether it's festive food, unique folklore, or heartfelt family gatherings, Christmas traditions offer a beautiful glimpse into the heart of each culture. No matter where you are, the spirit of the season brings joy, warmth, and connection to people across the globe.

Annual Bucket List Travel
As a travel advisor, it's no surprise that I've visited a wide array of Caribbean resorts, embarked on countless cruises, and explored numerous countries. Yet, my wanderlust is insatiable, and I continually add new destinations to my bucket list, both domestically and internationally. Fortunately, I’ve built strong relationships with vendors around the globe, keeping me updated on the latest offerings. This way, even when I can’t travel to a destination frequently, I have trusted contacts to help me deliver exceptional service to my clients.
Every January, I take time to reassess my bucket list and outline my travel plans for the year. This year is particularly special as I’m officially an empty nester and expanding my business to include Wellness Travel. With this in mind, I’m excited to dream big and plan ahead.
Here are some of the top destinations on my bucket list:
Canyon Ranch Wellness Resort – With multiple locations across the U.S., I recently visited the Lenox, MA resort as part of my wellness certification program. I’ll share more about this incredible place in a future newsletter.
Virgin Voyages Cruise – I’m proud to be a Gold Level First Mate, having completed the Virgin Voyages Specialist Training.
Savannah – One of my all-time favorite cities, known for its stunning beauty.
Washington DC
Italy – Several cities and wellness retreats are on my list here.
Spain
I hope this list sparks inspiration as you consider your own travel aspirations, whether planning a family trip, a romantic weekend getaway, or a milestone journey this year. Now is the perfect time to start planning, especially since January—known as Wave Season in the travel industry—is the busiest month for bookings. Gather your ideas and be ready to beat the rush!

Busting a myth about travel planning
Worried about not being part of the travel planning process or paying more for your trip when you work with a travel advisor?
Let me bust this myth really quickly because the truth is, when you work with me on your trip, you can be as involved (or as hands-off) in the planning process as you’d like, and it's not automatically going to cost you more when you work with a travel advisor versus booking online, but more on that in a minute.
Some clients enjoy being actively involved in the planning and decision-making process, while others prefer to leave the details to me to avoid decision fatigue. I give my clients the flexibility to be as involved as they want, allowing them to choose their preferred method of communication—whether it’s by phone, email, Zoom, or in person. This gives them control from the very beginning. Throughout the planning, I make sure they can engage at any level they choose. Plus, I alleviate the overwhelm of sorting through countless trip ideas by providing options that are custom-tailored to their needs.
On average, I save my clients up to $400 per trip compared to online bookings, thanks to my access to exclusive perks and insider knowledge. Sometimes that comes in the form of actual upfront travel cost savings and sometimes it is via the time I save throughout the process.
When it comes to pricing, I often find that booking through me is generally comparable to available online options. However, I also have access to a range of tours, properties, etc. that are not available to the general public providing a bigger selection to choose from but even when we’re considering the same online availability, my pricing typically remains competitive.
Just know that when you book with me, my services to plan, book, and manage your getaway are included in the planning fee I quote up front as part of the initial process. When you book online, you're solely responsible for planning and managing your trip. My clients also know they have someone to rely on when things don’t go as planned.
The key to working with a travel advisor is keeping open lines of communication throughout the process. This way, your needs are clearly expressed and understood, ensuring that every detail is perfect and tailored just for you.
Do you have questions about what it is like to work with a travel advisor? Reach out anytime, I would be happy to help.

What is VAT?
VAT, or Value Added Tax, is a consumption tax placed on goods and services in many countries around the world. It’s usually included in the price you pay for products and services. Unlike sales tax, which is only added at the point of sale, VAT is applied at each stage of production and distribution. This means you might encounter VAT charges on a range of expenses, from hotel stays to souvenirs.
How VAT Affects Your Travel
When you travel internationally, VAT can impact several aspects of your trip:
Accommodation: Many countries apply VAT to hotel and accommodation costs.
Dining and Entertainment: Restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues often include VAT in their prices.
Shopping: Purchases made abroad, including luxury items and everyday goods, are often subject to VAT.
How to Maximize Your VAT Refund
Know the Rules: Each country has its own VAT refund policies. Generally, tourists are eligible for VAT refunds on merchandise only purchased during their stay, provided they are bringing the items home and out of the country where purchased. Research the specific VAT refund rules for your destination before you travel or ask me, I would be happy to help.
Keep Your Receipts: Always ask for and keep your receipts when making purchases. You’ll need these to claim a refund. Ensure that your receipts include detailed information, including the VAT amount paid.
Fill Out the Paperwork: At the airport or border, you’ll need to present your receipts and completed VAT refund forms to customs for validation. Make sure you allow enough time at the airport to handle this process.
Use Refund Services: Many airports and cities offer VAT refund services, which can help streamline the process. Look for companies like Global Blue which is my preferred vendor or Premier Tax Free, which facilitate VAT refunds and often have counters at major travel hubs.
Global Blue: Global Blue is a leading VAT refund service provider that can streamline the refund process for you. Look for Global Blue refund counters at major airports and cities or go online to find more information. Their user-friendly services include easy-to-follow procedures and quick processing, helping you get your VAT refund efficiently.
Plan Ahead: Allow plenty of time for the VAT refund process, especially if you’re submitting claims by mail. Understanding the process ahead of time will help you avoid any last-minute stress.
Why VAT Matters for Your Budget
Understanding and managing VAT can lead to significant savings on your travel expenses. By taking the time to familiarize yourself with the VAT rules and processes, you can ensure that you’re getting the most out of your travel budget.
While you enjoy some cozy fall reading time prepare for your next adventure, keep VAT in mind, and use the available resources to maximize your refunds. For more detailed information and assistance, feel free to reach out or consult local VAT refund services.

Introducing ETIAS: What You Need to Know Before Your European Adventure
Keep in mind that the ETIAS requirement has not yet gone into effect but will tentatively be required in mid-2025. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure a hassle-free European journey!
What is ETIAS?
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is a new entry requirement for visa-exempt travelers to the Schengen Area, which includes 27 European countries. Set to be implemented starting in 2025, ETIAS is designed to enhance security and streamline border control by pre-screening travelers before they arrive.
Who Needs ETIAS?
ETIAS applies to travelers from visa-exempt countries who are planning to visit the Schengen Area for tourism, business, or transit purposes. This includes many countries outside the European Union, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan.
How to Apply for ETIAS
Applying for ETIAS is a straightforward online process. Here’s how you can prepare:
Visit the ETIAS Website: Applications will be available on the official ETIAS website. Ensure you access the correct site to avoid scams.
Complete the Application: Provide basic personal information, passport details, and answer a few security-related questions. The application is expected to take about 10-15 minutes.
Pay the Fee: A small fee will be required for the ETIAS application. Check the website for the exact amount and payment methods.
Receive Authorization: Most ETIAS applications are processed within minutes. You will receive your authorization via email, which you should print or save on your device for travel.
ETIAS vs. Schengen Visa
It’s important to note that ETIAS is not a visa. It’s a pre-travel authorization that allows visa-exempt travelers to enter the Schengen Area. If you’re from a country that requires a visa to enter the Schengen Area, you will still need to apply for a Schengen visa.
Travel Tips for ETIAS
Apply Early: While ETIAS approvals are typically quick, it’s wise to apply at least a few weeks before your travel date to avoid any last-minute issues.
Check Your Passport: Ensure your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area.
Update Your Details: If there are any changes to your travel plans or personal information after applying, update your ETIAS authorization accordingly.
Need Assistance?
If you have any questions about the ETIAS application process or need help with your travel plans, I am here to assist you. Feel free to reach out for personalized support!

Navigating the Real ID Requirement - What You Need to Know
What is Real ID?
The Real ID Act, passed by Congress in 2005, aims to enhance security for travelers by setting standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Starting from May 7, 2025, every traveler aged 18 and over will need a Real ID-compliant form of identification to board domestic flights or access federal facilities.
Is Your ID Real ID-Compliant?
Real ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards have a star-shaped symbol in the top right corner. To determine if your ID meets the requirements, check the following:
Look for the Star: Real IDs will have a gold or black star in the top right corner.
Check Your State’s Requirements: Each state has specific procedures for issuing Real IDs. Visit your state’s DMV website for details on how to apply.
How to Obtain a Real ID
Getting a Real ID is a straightforward process, but it does require a few steps:
Gather Documentation: You’ll need to provide proof of identity, Social Security number, and residency. Check your state’s DMV website for a complete list of acceptable documents.
Visit Your Local DMV: Schedule an appointment or visit your local DMV office. Some states may also offer online or mail-in applications.
Pay the Fee: There may be a fee associated with obtaining a Real ID. Verify the cost with your state’s DMV.
What If You Don’t Have a Real ID?
If you do not obtain a Real ID by May 7, 2025, you will need to use an alternative form of identification for air travel and federal facility access. Acceptable alternatives include:
Passport: A valid U.S. passport or passport card.
Military ID: A U.S. Department of Defense ID card.
Other Federal Identification: Check the TSA and federal guidelines for additional acceptable forms.
Travel Tips and Reminders
Plan Ahead: Ensure your Real ID is up-to-date before traveling. If you need to renew or apply for a Real ID, do so well in advance of your travel dates.
Check Airline Policies: Airlines may have specific requirements for boarding, so verify with your carrier if you have any questions.
Stay Informed: Keep an eye on updates from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and your state’s DMV for any changes or additional requirements.
Need Assistance?
I'm always here to help with any questions you might have about the Real ID process or other travel-related inquiries. Feel free to reach out for personalized assistance!
