The Hidden Costs of Bad Travel Planning

And no, I'm not talking about baggage fees . . .
A mistake is frustrating, friend.
But a mistake that costs time or money? Yikes. Those sting a little more!
In an era where everyone's watching their dollar and chasing more time, I wanted to talk about how to hang onto both when planning your next trip.
There are obvious ways to lose time and money while traveling (obligatory reminder to check those passport expiration dates!), but there are sneakier decisions that seem totally reasonable in the moment and end up making your trip harder than it needs to be.
Here are three of the most common planning mistakes I see, and exactly how to avoid them.
Mistake #1: Picking a Destination Before Defining the Goal
This one costs you everything: time spent planning a trip that doesn't fit how you travel, money spent on flights, hotels, and experiences that miss the mark, and the flat, deflated feeling of a vacation that just wasn't it.
The Fix: Get clear on how you like to travel before you decide where to go. Matching the trip to the traveler is the most important thing a good advisor does.
Mistake #2: Booking Based On Price Alone
The cheapest flight has three layovers and lands at 1:17am. The cheapest hotel is a 45-minute taxi from everything you actually want to see. The cheapest dates happen to land in hurricane season. Saving money matters, but context matters too.
The Fix: Look at the full picture, not just the price tag! Cheap and good value are rarely the same thing.
Mistake #3: Packing Too Much In, Too Fast
Moving hotels every two nights. Rushing from landmark to landmark to check off a top-10 list. Standing in a line you could've skipped with VIP access. This is a marathon run at a sprint pace! You'll finish, but you'll barely remember it.
The Fix: Slow the itinerary down and lean on insider access. Fewer hotels, less chaos, more magic.
P.S. I couldn't stop at three, so here's one more bonus mistake to avoid. Booking at the wrong time (or for certain seasons) can cost you more! Shifting your dates by even a week or two, often with zero sacrifice in experience, can save you hundreds — sometimes thousands.
The Fix: Think flexible before you think final. If your schedule has any wiggle room, use it! A travel advisor knows the shoulder seasons and sweet spots, and that knowledge alone can more than cover the cost of working with one.
