Plot twists belong in movies.
Not in your travel plans.
Who doesn’t love a good plot twist?
Answer: you, on vacation!
When it comes to travel, the tiniest overlooked detail can mean the difference between poolside cocktails and a very long airport line.
You’ll want to save this email because these are mistakes you'll want to avoid at all costs.
Let’s make sure you don’t learn them the hard way 🤪
-
NOT CHECKING YOUR PASSPORT PROPERLY: Not just “is it expired?” Is it valid for at least six months beyond your return date? Does it have enough blank pages? Plenty of travelers don’t
realize there’s a validity rule until they’re standing at the check-in counter. And yes, airlines will deny boarding! This one can end the trip before it starts.
-
SKIPPING ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: Visas. Electronic travel authorizations. Proof of onward travel. Vaccination rules. These change often! “I’ve traveled before, I’m fine” is how people end up panic-filling out forms on airport Wi-Fi five minutes before boarding.
-
PRIORITIZING PRICE OVER TIME: The cheaper flight with two layovers. The airport that’s technically “near” your destination (two hours away). The hotel that’s “right outside of town”, with no easily accessible transportation. Yes, you saved $200, but at what cost?
-
SKIPPING TRAVEL INSURANCE: No one plans for weather delays, medical issues abroad, or last-minute cancellations. But when they happen, the cost of not having insurance is usually
much higher than the cost of having it. This is one of those “I’ll never skip that again” lessons.
-
BOOKING SOMEONE ELSE’S EXPERIENCE: Your coworker loved that resort. Your neighbor swears by that cruise line. But were they celebrating a milestone birthday? Traveling with toddlers? On a completely different budget? What worked beautifully for someone else might be completely wrong for your pace, priorities, or expectations.
Most of these mistakes don’t happen because travelers are careless. They happen because travel is more layered than it looks. (And because we assume, "It’ll all work out!")
The good news? The big stuff is avoidable with a little foresight, thoughtful planning, and the right person in your corner (hi! 👋).
Until next time, travelers ❤️🌴
